We strongly suggest having some riding experience before purchasing one of these machines, since they have a lot of moving parts, will require regular maintenance and can move very quickly compared to their electric counterparts.
In form and function, electric bikes are not much different from gas-powered bikes. The key differences come to operating costs, maintenance and performance. While electric bikes tend to be more expensive to purchase, their operating costs are significantly lower than gas-powered bikes. They require very little maintenance, and are exceptionally easy to assemble. Electric mini dirt bikes are charged through a cable attached to a standard 120V outlet and typically require between 9 and 12 hours to reach full charge. A single charge allows for an hour of operation at maximum speed, which is far better than what you will get for a tank of gas in a gas-powered bike.

For the price, you will be hard-pressed to find a better start-off dirt bike as a beginner-level machine.
To start with, the 49cc 2-stroke engine kicks out a lot of power, with a maximum speed clocked at about 25 miles per hour. Although most engines produce roughly the same amount of speed, the lightweight design and frame of this model meant it could fly when driven by an experienced dirt biker. The DISC brakes also mean it can be stopped easily without the need for confusing foot brakes, making it a greater learning bike for younger kids.
When it comes to operation, start-up is a breeze with a simplified 1-step ignition system. Simply pull the ignition rope, hit the throttle and you’re off. Braking is done through hand-grips while the torque output means the rider will be in full control of the bike at all times. The 50cc mini dirt bike is designed to be lightweight, easy to operate and fuel efficient. A 1 gallon tank uses a gas-oil mixture to produce some serious power output for such a small machine. The manufacturer also stands by their product with customer service and parts replacement. Since a trainer bike can expect some wear and tear throughout its life, this is a huge plus.
Although this 50 cc mini dirt bike performed very well in our tests, it is extremely cost-effective and this is reflected in its durability. Multiple repairs were needed after a few crashes and bail-outs, which will happen with any beginner or learner dirt bike. Unfortunately, the lightweight design and high power output of this bike made these crashes more likely, which increased our need to supply spare parts. Although this is to be expected under the circumstances, it also means that you can expect to spend a fair amount of time repairing this dirt bike. This is problematic since the instructions for putting the bike together were a bit difficult to understand. We had to revert to using YouTube to understand the build process.
As with any other product, you get what you pay for. This is a relatively low-end dirt bike for beginners. You will not get the performance, power or longevity that you will get out of other dirt bikes on the market. However, if you are looking for a starter dirt bike to determine whether it is the right activity for your child, this is a great place to start. It does have the option of training wheels for small kids, which will help them get a feel for dirt bike riding and avoid crashes, which will improve the lifespan of the dirt bike. For a simple, no-nonsense beginner option, it would be tough to beat this model.
The Razor MX400 is part of Razor’s MX series of excellent electric mini dirt bikes. It is a scaled-down version of the MX650, and therefore can carry less weight. It also features a slightly lower maximum speed than the MX650. The upshot of this is that you have a smaller, lighter, more manoeuvrable machine designed with young kids in mind. It is extremely easy to operate and functions for up to an hour on a full charge. Although it is a smaller version of the MX650, both were very well-received by our testers for different reasons. Although the MX650 was more powerful and built for older, more experienced riders, the MX400 was a perfect fit for smaller kids and inexperienced riders to help them get their balance on a dirt bike before moving on to a more powerful version.
The MX400 is what we refer to as an entry-level mini dirt bike. It is perfectly suited to smaller kids in the 6 to 10 age range. We have seen customer reviews of 3 year olds operating it, however, so we feel it is a great choice for kids of any age. The weight limit of the MX400 is about 140 pounds, making it a great choice for kids and young teenagers. It can operate at 15 miles per hour, can handle a complete hour of operation on a single charge, and can take a beating and continue to function. The beauty of this machine is that it is not weighted like an electric mini dirt bike. At only 65 pounds shipping weight (about 63 pounds operating weight), it is one of the lightest electric dirt bikes on the market. This makes it ideal for young kids and takes away a lot of concerns parents have regarding crashes and falls.
The assembly involved with this bike is minimal, since it is electric-powered. We were able to put our test machine together in about 15 minutes. The bonus here is that there is no additional fiddling required. No mixing gas and oil, no mechanical tune-ups, and no concerns of worn out parts to be replaced. Simply hook it up to a 120V outlet, let it charge and you’re ready to ride. We were surprised and impressed with the amount of torque the MX400 could kick out, providing our testers with a lot of enjoyment during their rides.
Unlike many mini dirt bikes we tested, the MX400 does not feature a suspension system. This makes it very light and easy to maintain, but can make the ride a bit bumpy. A properly-dressed child will not be affected by this, so we suggest ensuring that your kids are properly prepared for a dirt bike ride before hopping on the MX400. It has a lower maximum speed than many electric dirt bikes on the market. Although this is kind of a downer, it also makes the MX400 ideal for smaller kids and helps get both riders and parents through the nervous first few rides.
Although an hour of operational time is great, it also requires a 12 hour recharge period once the batteries are exhausted. This is not bad when the MX400 is used as a once-in-awhile entertainment toy. However, for youngsters looking to jump head first into dirt biking, this will present a challenge. For most kids, however, we found the battery charge lasted longer than the interest in riding the dirt bike. One other issue we had with the MX400 was the reduced wheel size. Most Razor models come with re-sized wheels for additional traction and terrain-covering ability. Not so the MX400. That being said, since it is meant for younger kids, we can understand the idea of creating a toy for them which forces them to stay on relatively level ground to start with. This is why we identify the MX400 as a beginner-level dirt bike.
The MX500 is the middleweight class of Razor’s MX lineup of electric mini dirt bikes. It features a 500-watt electric motor that can carry riders up to 15 miles per hour. A single battery charge lasts for about an hour at full velocity. It is built to handle weights up to 175 pounds which places it on the high end for mini dirt bikes. As far as mini dirt bikes go, this is the middle ground if you are seeking performance and easy use. Of particular note is the excellent suspension system the MX500 offers, which makes riding it extremely comfortable. We would strongly suggest this option for riders of all ages and experience levels since it is easy to maintain, fun to ride and does not reach excessive high speeds.
The MX500 is what you get when you ask for a beginner-level, medium-performance mini dirt bike for kids. It handles extremely well due to its pneumatic knobby tires, which also serve as excellent power-transfer modules. It is designed to hold very large weight limits (the manufacturer says 14 years and older, or 175 pounds) and provides great acceleration regardless of the weight placed upon it. It maxes out at 15 miles per hour, which is fast enough to enjoy the ride in relative safety. We found this to be a big plus for concerned parents and beginner-level kids. As a safety measure, we recommend that the rider be at least 45 inches tall in order to operate the MX500. For our money, however, the biggest value the MX500 provides is its suspension system.
The suspension system featured in the MX500 is second to none. It allows the rider to take bumpy terrain without thinking twice, and permits the large weight limit we mentioned earlier. We found that a 100 pound child could effortlessly operate this machine, which makes it great as a long-term investment since your child will likely tire of riding it before it dies. It is also an extremely affordable electric mini dirt bike option, and the maintenance and mechanical skill required to assemble it is practically nil. We were able to assemble it in about 15 minutes, and it was ready for operation once it was fully charged. Our tests showed that it could operate at peak capacity for about an hour, depending on the weight of the rider. This makes it great for regular riding and for special days.
The MX500 is a great middleweight electric mini dirt bike. As such, it is designed to run the middle ground in terms of form and function. This makes it a great compromise between speed and the ability to carry heavy weights. That being said, since it is designed to be a generalist mini dirt bike, it does not specialize in any of the rating categories we assign to dirt bikes. At 15 miles per hour, it travels slower than some electric dirt bikes we tested and much slower than the gas-powered dirt bikes we reviewed. It is capable of carrying up to 175 pounds, which is better than the gas-powered dirt bikes, however this is lower than some electric bikes we tested.
Based on its own merits, the MX500 is a solid choice for riders of any experience level. We would like to see greater speed out of a bike this size although this is part of having an electric dirt bike. Of all the bikes we tested, this one performed best when it came to customer reviews. There is not much we can say about it in negative terms. It rides well, it attains decent speed, it can carry a lot of weight and it is built to last. As an added benefit, it operates quietly as most electric mini dirt bikes do. It is also remarkably easy to assemble. Multiple customer reviews show that 10 and 11 year olds were capable of putting the bike together themselves, with minor parental supervision. If you are looking for a well-rounded mini dirt bike option, the Razor MX500 is our personal pick for you.
The Razor MX650 is one of our preferred dirt bikes for several reasons. It features very wide knobbed tires for excellent traction in muddy areas. It is powered by electricity, which means there is no need for fuel refills or complicated assembly. It also has an exceptionally high weight limit for riders at 220 pounds. This makes it one of the “larger mini dirt bikes” we reviewed. It is more expensive than many dirt bikes on this website, but it is also designed with easy use, power and traction in mind. This makes it great for beginners and experienced riders alike.
As an electric dirt bike, any MX650 review demands knowledge of the operating time of a single charge. At 40 minutes or 10 miles of constant use, the MX650 is at the higher end of the spectrum when it comes to electric dirt bike functionality. You will get more distance out of a gas-fueled engine, but you won’t get the same ease of access to fuel sources (a 120V outlet will do) or the same power you get out of the MX650. With 220 pounds of carrying capacity, the MX650 has the strength to carry a rider of any size, making it greater for both kids and teenagers - a rarity among the bikes we tested. At 16” and 14” respectively, it also features significantly larger wheels than most mini dirt bikes.
The industry standard for mini dirt bike wheels is 12”, which is great for general purpose operation in dry areas. Through tough mud and wet conditions, however, that additional wheel diameter helps to get you through your ride. The big benefit of an electric-powered mini dirt bike, however, is the ability to operate it for 40 minutes on a single charge and to have it ready to operate again within an hour. Anyone with younger kids know this is about how long a typical ride will last before moving on to another activity. We found the MX650 to be an excellent middle-step between beginner riders and experienced ones, without the need for refueling or measuring gas:oil ratios for the engine. It also means less assembly time and maintenance for you with fewer moving parts.
Although the MX650 can hold heavier riders, travel significant distances and get through tough terrain, it does have shortcomings. For die-hard riders, 40 minutes of operating time and several hours of waiting times for recharging are unacceptable. We did not find this to be a significant factor in our tests, but for kids that are looking to be on their bikes every minute of every day, this is probably not a great choice. With heavier rider occupancy also comes a heavier machine. At 111 pounds, the MX650 is twice the weight of many machines we tested and this may factor into the decision-making process of parents with small kids.
In addition to potentially shorter run times, the MX650 is capable of only 17 miles per hour at peak charge. Compared to gas-operated models, which regularly operate at 25 miles per hour, this may not be a favorite for experienced riders. On the flip side, however, it may be just what a worried parent wants for a first-time rider. Although the manufacturer suggests a rider age of 16 years or older, we found that 13 and 14 year olds could operate the machine safely and effectively. We have seen customer reviews where 7 year olds were operating this machine safely, so we suggest taking the manufacturer’s recommendation with a grain of salt.
The Razor MX350 is the smallest member of Razor’s MX family of electric mini dirt bikes. Although it is smaller than its cousins, the MX350 still has the power and operating time to provide entertainment to younger kids with the safety all parents want. It is specifically built to provide bursts of speed without the trouble associated with mixed fuel gasoline engines. This reduces the mess of maintenance and the frustration of fuel. It also saves you from having to regularly mix gas and oil to ensure the engine operates smoothly. Lastly, without a gas-powered engine, the risk of burns and overheating is removed entirely.
The MX350 Dirt Rocket is a terrific mini dirt bike for kids. It is capable of generating 12 to 15 miles per hour for up to an hour of run time on a single charge. We found this great because most kids get tired of riding before the mini dirt bike requires charging. It is extremely compact, shipping at less than 65 pounds. This means that your young kids can easily operate it without having to worry about excessive speeds. We found it easily capable of supporting a rider of 100 pounds, although we would not suggest putting anyone heavier than 140 pounds on it.
Since the MX350 is an electric mini dirt bike, it is perfectly suited to small kids since it does not require adult supervision to maintain, start or operate. At an hour of operational time on a single charge, there are good odds that the Dirt Rocket will outlast your child’s interest. However, with a few hours of charging, it will be ready to use again without any fuel mixing or maintenance. We found one of the best benefits of this mini dirt bike to be the very easy assembly. Within 15 minutes, we had the bike out of the box, ready to use and charging for its first use. This makes it great as a special gift for a birthday or holiday since it can be used the same day it comes out of the box.
While there is little we can say against the MX350, it does have some drawbacks compared to larger MX models. It is not as powerful as its larger cousins, making the MX350 the tyke version of the electric mini dirt bikes we tested. It is built for young kids, so this is understandable. It does not bring as much speed or power as a standard gas-powered mini dirt bike, although this is true of nearly all electric mini dirt bikes. Again, this is a mini dirt bike built for small kids, so the reduced speed may be ideal for parents who are concerned about their kids becoming speed demons.
It also cannot hold larger individuals, so it is best used for small kids. We suggest ages 6 and older for best results although during our tests kids as young as 4 were able to operate the MX350 effectively. Overall, the MX350 Dirt Rocket is a great little dirt bike, although it should not be expected to function above what it is - a ride-around mini dirt bike with the ability to handle slightly rugged terrain for small kids. It’s a terrific starter bike to see whether your kids are interested in pursuing dirt biking over the long term or merely enjoy the idea of having access to one in the short term. The cost is exceptional for what you get and will save you big money over time if your child decides dirt biking is not in their future. We strongly suggest beginning with the MX350 if you child has expressed an interest in dirt bikes as it will be the litmus test to determine whether they are serious or not.
